Collection: Cuphea - Cigar Plants

Cuphea plants bring a marvelous mix of tiny tubular flowers, saturated color, and months of garden activity. Often called cigar plants or false heathers, they bloom in shades of red, orange, pink, purple, and lavender. Many varieties are irresistible to hummingbirds, while bees and butterflies also visit the nectar-rich flowers.

This diverse genus includes compact mounding plants and larger shrubby forms, so choose by mature habit as well as flower color. Smaller Cupheas shine in patio pots, window boxes, edging, and mixed containers. Larger selections can become long-blooming anchors in sunny borders and pollinator gardens. Most appreciate sun to part shade, well-drained soil, and regular water while establishing, but hardiness and moisture needs vary by species and cultivar.

In mild climates, some cigar plants behave as evergreen or semi-evergreen perennials; elsewhere they may be grown as warm-season annuals or protected from frost. Check each product page for mature size, climate range, and variety-specific care before planting.
