Madly blooming and wildly visited by hummingbirds, Cuphea micropetala is an evergreen shrubby perennial with nonstop color in mild climates. Commonly called candy corn plant or cigar plant, it produces zillions of 2.5" tubular bicolor flowers in warm orange and yellow tones along radiating red stems, creating a fiesta of bloom that looks especially fabulous from late summer into fall in colder areas.
Growing up to about 4' tall and 5' wide, this glossy-leaved Cuphea makes a showy addition to sunny borders, pollinator gardens, low-water landscapes, large containers, and even challenging parking strip plantings. Hummingbirds absolutely adore the nectar-rich flowers, and the plant brings a lush, cheerful look with surprisingly little maintenance.
Plant Cuphea micropetala in full sun to part shade with well-drained soil. It is drought tolerant, clay tolerant, salt tolerant, and wonderfully easy once established. Cut back to about 1.5' tall in winter to maintain a smaller shape. Explore more hummingbird favorites in our Cuphea - Cigar Plants collection.

Excellent plant! The flowers are very big and showy, peaking in late summer and fall, often well into winter. I've found this plant to be reliably hardy to at least 30F, especially since it grows in a hot summer spot in my garden. Does best with some shade inland, but also surprisingly drought-tolerant with a good mulch. Absolute must for hummingbirds
