Description
Puffs of vivid rose-pink flowers rise above a soft carpet of feather-cut foliage on Achillea millefolium ‘Island Pink,’ a colorful selection of California’s native yarrow from Santa Cruz Island. The foliage stays semi-evergreen in mild gardens, and its clean, aromatic scent helps make this an appealing choice for low-water borders, pollinator plantings, and relaxed cottage-style beds.
‘Island Pink’ forms a spreading mat about 1 foot tall and roughly 3 feet wide, with flat-topped flower clusters held on slender stems from spring into summer. The blooms provide easy landing platforms for bees and butterflies and are useful for casual garden bouquets. Its finely divided green leaves bring a soft texture between bloom cycles, while the plant’s spreading habit makes it useful along paths, in meadow gardens, and as a flowering groundcover.
Plant it in full sun or part sun in well-drained soil. Water regularly while roots establish, then reduce irrigation; established plants are water-wise but appreciate occasional summer water in hotter inland gardens. Deer tend to avoid the aromatic foliage. Shear spent flower stems for a fresh flush and divide spreading clumps in the cool season when needed.
