Monkey flowers bring snapdragon-like blooms, bold markings, and a delightful amount of personality to the garden. Commonly sold under the familiar name Mimulus, these plants now span several botanical groups, including moisture-loving species and shrubbier California natives adapted to seasonally dry conditions. Flowers may be yellow, orange, red, pink, cream, or dramatically bicolored.

That diversity means care is not one-size-fits-all. Some monkey flower plants appreciate consistent moisture and part shade, while many western native selections prefer sun, excellent drainage, and reduced summer irrigation after establishment.
