Description

Zinfandel sweet pea pours rich claret and burgundy down the length of a spring trellis. The ruffled, satiny flowers have the depth of vintage wine and a delicious orange-blossom-and-honey perfume that makes every cut stem feel extravagant.

An early bloomer, Zinfandel quickly cloaks a fence or arbor and produces long stems for striking, nearly monochromatic bouquets. Its dark flowers are especially luminous beside cream, blush, or silver companions.

Sowing & Growing Instructions

Work compost or aged manure into a deep, well-drained bed and install a sturdy support. Sow seeds 1 inch deep and 2–3 inches apart in cool early spring, or in fall in mild-winter climates.

Keep the soil moist while seedlings establish. Germination is typically 12–28 days under the source conditions. Thin when seedlings are about 2 inches tall, leaving 4–5 inches between plants.

Mulch, water regularly, and tie or guide new growth as needed. Sweet peas bloom before intense summer heat; picking flowers often and removing faded blossoms extends the season.
