About Us
Welcome to Annie's Annuals & Perennials
From Humble Beginnings a Garden Legacy Grows
Founded in 1977 by Annie Hayes, Annie’s Annuals & Perennials has long been adored by gardeners for its rare and heirloom plants, spirited point of view, and deep love of beauty and discovery in the garden.
What began as Annie’s backyard hobby eventually grew into a large retail nursery located in Richmond, CA. It quickly became a horticultural landmark—famous for uncommon annuals and perennials, and an unapologetically plant-forward philosophy. Annie’s has always chosen plants not for convenience or cookie-cutter uniformity, but for personality: fragrance that stops you mid-path, stems that sway in the breeze, color that feels like a small celebration, and textures you can’t help leaning in to admire.
We Let Plants Be Plants
At Annie’s we love plants that behave like plants— reaching, spiraling, mingling, tumbling, and making themselves at home.
We have a special soft spot for old-fashioned annuals that self-sow with gusto, returning each year with happy surprises and the kind of “Wait… how did that happen?” combinations that make gardening feel like a friendly little mystery.
Annies' Annuals & Perennials Transistion
Over time, Annie’s retail nursery expanded to offer its extensive collection of rare plants, cottage classics, heirlooms and natives to enthusiastic gardeners nationwide via mail order and online. But alas, in the early 2020s, after nearly 30 years, Annie Hayes decided to retire.
Happily though, the retail nursery location in Richmond CA is open and operating as Curious Flora Nursery. A small group of longtime and dedicated Annie’s Annuals and Perennials team members pooled their talents and passion to keep the nursery space open and growing the plants for which Annie’s is famous, making them available to local area customers.
The Next Chapter
After the closure of Annie’s Annuals & Perennials in October 2024, the catalog and mail order brand was purchased by Jill and Bill Hageman.
Jill and Bill are longtime gardeners, and they’re committed to carrying the Annie’s legacy forward in the way it deserves: keeping the brand true to itself, protecting what makes it unmistakably Annie’s, and maintaining access to the rare and heirloom plants gardeners have come to treasure for generations.
Today, Annie’s Annuals & Perennials returns to gardens across the continental United States at AnniesAnnuals.com. At our online home, we’ve curated a collection that honors our roots, featuring the same whimsical annuals and hardy perennials—chosen for their character and grace—that have captivated the hearts of plant lovers for decades.
The Hagemans are also the owners of the Peaceful Valley Farm & Garden Supply nursery, a family-owned business founded in 1976 in Grass Valley, CA, that has been trusted by growers for 50 years. Its online extension, GrowOrganic.com, has also become a leading source for organic farm and garden supplies nationwide. With the addition of Annie's Annuals & Perennials business, the same core values now guide all their work: strengthening the connection between people and plants, leading with care, and building trust through consistency, quality, and doing right by the growing community.
All their businesses are carried forward with intention—not to change what makes them special, but to protect what makes them worth loving.
Annie’s Annuals & Perennials continues to operate as its own independent business, with its own identity, voice, and plant philosophy.
How Our Plants Get Their Start
Annie’s no longer grows everything in one single, centralized nursery—but we are still deeply involved in how our plants are raised, from selection to cultivation to the moment they’re ready to join your garden.
We work with a small network of carefully chosen partner growers, who meet Annie’s high standards for quality and thoughtful cultivation. We stay close to the details that matter: strong roots, sturdy growth, and plants that arrive ready to thrive. Depending on the plant, they’re started from seed, plugs, or cuttings and grown in natural conditions that help them harden off beautifully for life outdoors.
We do not offer plants grown from genetically modified or engineered seeds, or plants that have been subject to growth-regulating hormones or neonicotinoids.
Our model has evolved. Our standards have not.
Plants We Love (and Why)
Annie’s plants are chosen for the feeling they bring into a garden—and into the gardener’s day. These are plants with presence: blooms you notice from across the yard, fragrance that pulls you down the path, and textures and color combinations that make you stop, look closer, and wonder what to try next. It’s the kind of collection that invites curiosity and rewards attention.
We gravitate toward plants with grace and movement—tall spires, airy wands, billowing mounds, and joyful spillers that mingle naturally and make a garden feel alive. And we especially love old-fashioned annuals that self-sow generously, returning with friendly volunteers and surprising new pairings that turn each season into its own little story.
This is a collection for gardeners who enjoy the process as much as the results: experimenting, swapping notes, sharing plants with friends, and finding community in the simple joy of growing something beautiful.
A World of Beautiful Finds
By partnering with multiple growers, we’re able to offer an unusually broad range of plants suited to many climates and garden styles—so whether your garden is fog-kissed, sun-baked, wind-swept, or nestled into a cozy courtyard, there’s something here that will feel right at home.
Our collection includes beloved classics and truly distinctive plants gathered from across the globe—uncommon annuals, perennials, and shrubs chosen for their beauty, character, and garden performance. You’ll also find a strong selection of West Coast native plants and pollinator favorites, curated for gardeners who want plantings that feel vibrant, natural, and full of discovery. It’s a mix designed to keep things interesting: familiar favorites alongside new obsessions, each one selected because it brings something special to the garden.
Every plant we offer is selected with care, reviewed against Annie’s high standards, and chosen because we believe it truly earns its place in the garden—bringing beauty, character, and that little spark of “I’ve never grown this before, but I have to try.”
