Unsurpassable in the big-and-tall department, Delphinium elatum ‘Dusky Maidens’ sends up strong, densely flowered spires in mulberry, mauve, and dusky rose. Dark fuzzy “bees” at each flower’s center deepen the moody coloring, giving this New Millennium delphinium the look of an antique silk gown—only six feet tall and considerably more attractive to bumblebees.

Mature plants generally reach 4–6 feet in bloom and make a magnificent vertical anchor for cottage gardens, perennial borders, and cutting beds. The stout stems carry generous double and semi-double flowers for seriously decadent bouquets. Place it behind roses, campanulas, foxgloves, or silver foliage, and give it a position where those extraordinary spires can rise without hiding shorter neighbors.

Plant ‘Dusky Maidens’ in full sun to light afternoon shade with rich, compost-amended, well-drained soil and regular water. Shelter it from punishing wind or provide discreet support as the spikes lengthen. After the main late-spring or early-summer display, cut spent stems back and feed lightly; established plants may reward you with a smaller fall encore.
