Midnight Magic

Mysterious, fragrant, and wonderfully pollinator-friendly, Trichostema lanatum × purpusii ‘Midnight Magic’ combines California’s famously beautiful Woolly Blue Curls with the more garden-accommodating Mexican species T. purpusii. The result is a rounded evergreen shrub with narrow, intensely aromatic foliage and velvety purple flowers animated by wonderfully long, curling stamens.

Growing about 3–5 feet tall and wide, ‘Midnight Magic’ is smaller and generally more adaptable than straight Woolly Blue Curls. It blooms from spring through fall, supplying vivid color and nectar for hummingbirds, bees, and other pollinators over a generous season. The dark leaves and electric flowers are striking with buckwheats, California fuchsias, silvery sages, grasses, and other textural dry-garden companions.

Plant it in full sun to light part sun with genuinely good drainage. Once established, it needs only occasional to low summer water, although this hybrid tolerates somewhat more garden water than its California parent. Avoid heavy, soggy soil and protect young plants from hard frost. Brush the foliage while passing and the fragrance alone will explain why this shrub belongs near a path.
