Description
Silver-gray leaves give ‘Compacta’ white sage a luminous presence even when the garden is between flowering seasons. The aromatic foliage is held closely along the stems, creating a denser, smaller plant than typical white sage while retaining its distinctive pale color and bold leaf shape. Against gravel, stone, or darker green plants, that silver foliage becomes a quiet focal point rather than a fleeting seasonal accent.
Usually about 2–4 feet tall and wide, this compact form makes an upright, branching shrub for a sunny native border or a dry slope. Airy stems carry small white flowers, sometimes touched with pale lavender, in spring into early summer. Bees visit the blossoms, and the seed can feed birds. Its evergreen foliage supplies year-round structure, although some leaf drop is natural during drought. See our salvia collection for other sages suited to fragrant, wildlife-friendly plantings.
Plant in full sun with excellent drainage, allowing enough room for air to move through the mature shrub. Water while roots establish, then keep irrigation infrequent; established plants in suitable California conditions may need no summer water. Avoid persistently wet soil, especially in cool weather. USDA Zones 8–10 are a conservative choice for garden use, since cold tolerance varies with drainage and local conditions. Light shaping after flowering can maintain an open, natural outline without repeated shearing.
