Description

Wild Bergamot is a midsummer meeting place for scent, color, and wildlife. Whorled heads of light lavender tubular flowers rise above aromatic foliage, drawing bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds into the garden.

Also called bee balm, this North American native perennial reaches about 4 feet and brings the easy rhythm of a meadow to sunny borders. Its spicy, oregano-like leaves and flowers can be used in teas or as a fragrant culinary garnish.

Sowing & Growing Instructions

Broadcast outdoors about eight weeks before the first fall frost, or surface sow indoors 4–6 weeks before the last spring frost. Press the tiny seeds into the surface without burying them and maintain even moisture and light.

Germination is typically 5–25 days under the source conditions. Transplant seedlings outdoors in spring or summer 6–8 weeks after sowing, spacing plants about 12 inches apart.

Choose full sun or part shade and allow time for perennial roots to establish; plants often wait until their second year to flower. Harvest unsprayed leaves and flowers lightly for tea or culinary use while leaving plenty for pollinators.
