Description
Striped flowers on a vine that wastes no time! Thunbergia alata ‘Amber Stripes’ puts a warm twist on the classic Black-Eyed Susan Vine, producing reddish-orange blooms edged in glowing yellow around a dark central eye. Against lush green foliage, the flowers look almost illuminated—little amber lanterns climbing toward the sun.
This fast-growing twiner can reach 6–8 feet, quickly dressing a trellis, obelisk, fence, arbor, or balcony railing. It is equally effective in a large container or hanging basket, where the stems can climb, spill, and generally behave with cheerful disregard for straight lines. The dense foliage also provides temporary screening in a remarkably short amount of time. The striped coloring remains easy to appreciate from a distance, making the vine especially effective on visible vertical supports.
Flowers continue through summer into fall, bringing hummingbirds and plenty of tropical-looking color to patios, entryways, and sunny borders. Give the young stems support early so they have something useful to grab. Regular water supports the long display, particularly in containers exposed to summer heat.
Fast, vivid, and just unusual enough to make the familiar Black-Eyed Susan Vine feel new again, ‘Amber Stripes’ is an easy route to instant vertical exuberance. Explore more Thunbergia vines.
