Description

Black-eyed Susan vine peeks through summer with bright orange and yellow faces, each centered by a deep, dramatic eye. Heart-shaped leaves clothe the graceful twining stems, giving a trellis, small arbor, or hanging basket a quick old-fashioned flourish.

The 4–5-foot vine starts deliberately, then gathers speed as warm weather settles in. Its cheerful 1½-inch flowers arrive in profusion at midsummer, bringing color to vertical spaces without the weight of a woody climber.

Sowing & Growing Instructions

Once nights remain above 50°F, direct sow in a sunny, sheltered site with fertile, well-drained soil. Place seeds 6 inches apart and 1/2 inch deep, provide supports at planting, and keep the soil moist but not soggy.

For an earlier start, sow in individual pots 5–6 weeks before the last frost. Cover 1/2 inch, keep warm and moist, and provide strong light. Germination is typically 14–21 days under the source conditions and can be gradual.

Harden off carefully and transplant without disturbing the roots. Feed container plants regularly, protect vines from strong wind, and guide new growth onto a trellis or allow it to trail from a basket.
