Description
Unusual, hardy, and completely captivating, Silene asterias ‘Cherry Drumsticks’ is a Bulgarian catchfly with the kind of curious beauty that makes plant lovers look twice. This faithful perennial increases in width and bloom each year, forming fresh spring-green rosettes of oblong leaves that look tidy and pretty even before the flowers arrive.
In late spring, strong upright “drumsticks” rise above the foliage, carrying fascinating spherical flower clusters up to 2" across. Each cluster is packed with small, rich carmine blooms held in dark wine-colored bracts, then finished with bright blue anthers for a striking, jewel-box effect. It is bold, intricate, and delightfully unexpected.
Growing about 18" tall and 15" wide, ‘Cherry Drumsticks’ Silene is wonderful in perennial borders, cottage gardens, cutting gardens, collector plantings, and containers where its unusual flowers can be admired up close. The blooms also make excellent cut flowers. Deciduous, dependable, and full of character, this is a rare little garden treasure with serious charm.
