Salvia ‘Pozo Blue’ is a rugged California native hybrid of Salvia clevelandii and Salvia leucophylla, combining aromatic, resinous foliage with whorls of violet-blue flowers. Its silvery-green leaves release a heady sage fragrance when brushed, making this substantial shrub as rewarding beside a path or patio as it is on a sunny slope.

Growing to approximately 4 feet tall and wide, ‘Pozo Blue’ provides evergreen structure in mild climates and pairs beautifully with buckwheats, penstemons, yarrow, ornamental grasses, and other water-wise plants. Hummingbirds, butterflies, native bees, and other pollinators visit the flowers during the long bloom season. The aromatic foliage may also make the plant less appealing to browsing deer, although no plant is completely deer-proof.

Plant ‘Pozo Blue’ in full sun with well-drained soil. Provide regular water while roots establish, then transition to deep, infrequent irrigation suited to the site and local climate. It tolerates heat and a range of soils, but avoid keeping the root zone constantly wet. Light pruning after flowering can refresh the shape and encourage new growth. In a large container, allow ample root room and monitor moisture more frequently than you would for an in-ground plant.
