Description

Spitfire sends scarlet-red flowers blazing through a cool field of round green leaves. The spurred blossoms hover along 4–6-foot vines, beckoning hummingbirds and bringing concentrated color to fences, short trellises, and large containers.

Both flowers and leaves are edible, with the peppery snap of watercress softened by a hint of sweetness. Train the vines upward for a vertical flourish or let them tumble freely over an edge.

Sowing & Growing Instructions

Sow after frost in full sun, or provide part shade in hot climates. Plant seeds 1 inch deep and 3–4 inches apart in ordinary, well-drained soil; firm the surface and keep moist until emergence.

Germination is typically 9–12 days under the source conditions. Thin to 10–12 inches apart. For an early start, sow two seeds in individual 4-inch pots about three weeks before the last frost and keep the stronger seedling.

Transplant after weather is consistently in the 50s. Nasturtiums flower best without rich fertilizer; provide even moisture during bloom and loosely guide vines onto a support if you want them to climb.
