Milkweed Seeds
Milkweed Seeds
Description
Common Milkweed makes a long-term home for monarchs. Fragrant pink flower clusters rise above broad leaves in summer, feeding adult pollinators while the foliage provides the essential food source for monarch caterpillars.
This eastern and midcontinental North American native perennial grows up to 3 feet and spreads into a lasting patch in Zones 3–7. Choose its location thoughtfully: a settled colony is both beautiful and ecologically useful.

Sowing & Growing Instructions
Cold stratification is required. Direct sow in fall or early winter into a clean, prepared bed, or sow 1/4 inch deep in damp medium in deep pots, cover, and refrigerate for about three weeks before spring germination.
After chilling, move pots to a bright 50–75°F location and keep evenly moist. Germination may take up to 21 days under the source conditions. Transplant outdoors after frost into a site that can remain a permanent milkweed patch.
Grow in full sun within the species' native eastern and midcontinental range. Avoid disturbing established roots, and leave enough foliage for monarch caterpillars as plants settle and spread.
