Mentha spicata
Spearmint

Fresh, fragrant, and wonderfully useful, Mentha spicata is the classic spearmint herb valued for its deep green, spear-shaped leaves and clean, sweet mint aroma. Growing about 18" tall and spreading up to 4' wide, this vigorous perennial herb is perfect for containers, restricted beds, herb gardens, pollinator plantings, and edible landscapes.

Spearmint is a favorite culinary mint for tea, drinks, sauces, salads, and kitchen seasoning, and its tiny pinkish-white summer flowers are loved by bees, butterflies, and other beneficial insects. Because it spreads by underground runners, it is best grown where it can roam freely or in a pot where its enthusiastic nature is easy to manage. The lush foliage also makes a beautiful, aromatic filler in patio containers.

Plant Mentha spicata in sun to part shade with rich, moist, well-drained soil. Regular water keeps the foliage fresh and abundant. Trim often to encourage bushy new growth and harvest frequently for the best flavor. Explore more practical garden favorites in our Edible & Useful collection.
