    Description

High Noon holds the summer light for weeks. Dense branches line its central stalk with clusters of 4–5-inch flowers, their golden petals warming toward orange around chocolate-brown centers.

The tall 6–8-foot plants create an easy screen and provide a steady run of stems for cutting. Pollinators find the open centers readily, and later the seed heads offer another reason to leave a few blooms in the garden.

    • Botanical name: Helianthus annuus
    • Life cycle: Annual
    • Exposure: Full sun
    • Sowing: Direct sow after frost or start indoors several weeks early
    • Planting depth: 1/2 in.
    • Germination: 8–10 days
    • Mature height: 6–8 ft.
    • Final spacing: 12 in.
    • Approximate seed count: 40

Seed-starting help: Tiny seeds, large opinions. This variety can begin indoors or outside. Compare direct sowing with indoor seed starting, then check when to begin in your climate.

Make several sowings about three weeks apart to stretch the show, then cut from the branching stems for bright, durable bouquets. Browse more sunny favorites in our flower seed packets.

    Sowing & Growing Instructions

Sow outdoors in full sun after frost, when days and nights are warm and settled. Plant seeds 1/2 inch deep and 4–5 inches apart in well-worked soil; firm gently and maintain even moisture until seedlings emerge.

Germination is typically 8–10 days under the source conditions. Thin to 12 inches apart when seedlings are about 3 inches tall. For an earlier start, sow in individual pots several weeks before the last frost and transplant carefully once nights reach 50–55°F.

Sunflowers need room and moderate fertility; excess nitrogen can reduce flowering. Protect young seedlings from birds, and sow again about every three weeks if you want a succession of long-lasting blooms.
