Interior West Gardening Regions: Rocky Mountains, Great Basin and High Desert

The most useful Interior West gardening region is the one that explains what happens in your yard. “Rocky Mountains,” “Great Basin” and “high desert” are helpful starting points, but elevation, topography, wind, soil and nearby development can change conditions over a short distance. This guide will help you identify the regional pattern that fits—and the local details that matter more than the label.

Read your garden in three passes

Pass 1: the regional pattern

Ask whether the garden is primarily shaped by mountain elevation, a broad interior basin, a high plateau or a combination. Note the usual distribution of precipitation, winter cold and summer heat. A mountain-influenced location may receive more precipitation than a nearby rain-shadow basin, yet both can experience low humidity and strong sun.

Pass 2: the landform

Identify whether the property sits on a valley floor, bench, slope, ridge, canyon bottom or open plateau. Landform affects cold-air movement, wind, drainage, sun angle and snowmelt. These effects can be more horticulturally important than a modest change in mapped hardiness zone.

Pass 3: the built microclimate

Walls, paving, fences, roof runoff, mature trees and neighboring buildings create another layer. An urban courtyard may hold nighttime warmth and block wind. A rural property at the same elevation may be colder and more exposed. Map individual beds instead of treating the entire property as one climate.

Rocky Mountain valleys

Mountain valleys are defined as much by cold-air behavior as by the peaks around them. Dense cold air can drain downslope and settle in low areas, creating frost pockets. A valley floor may experience colder nights than a nearby bench or lower slope even though it sits at a lower elevation.

Do not assume that mountain valleys remain cool all summer. Many accumulate substantial daytime heat, especially in dry air and full sun. Plants must sometimes tolerate both cold winters and hot afternoons. Look for the actual frost-free window, nighttime temperatures, wind and soil rather than borrowing a calendar from the nearest large city.

Rocky Mountain foothills

Foothills often contain rapid shifts in elevation, slope and exposure. South- and west-facing slopes usually receive more solar energy and may warm or dry sooner. North- and east-facing slopes can remain cooler, hold snow later or offer afternoon protection. Steep sites may shed water quickly while small benches or compacted areas hold it.

Foothill development also creates warm walls, paved surfaces and disturbed soils. These features can extend the season in one bed while intensifying summer stress in another. Mountain towns and higher elevations

Higher-elevation gardens commonly face cool nights, a compressed growing season, intense sunlight and drying wind. Snow depth and duration vary by location and year, so do not count on a continuous insulating blanket. A protected bed close to a building may support plants that fail in an open area only a short distance away.

Season length matters greatly for annuals and late-blooming perennials. Winter hardiness alone cannot tell you whether a plant will receive enough warm weather to mature or flower. Record actual spring and fall frost events at the property and choose plant forms that match exposure.

Intermountain basins and the Great Basin

The Great Basin and other interior basins are often shaped by rain shadows, low humidity and limited precipitation. Summer days can be hot while nights cool sharply. Winter cold remains a serious filter, and frost can return late or arrive early depending on elevation and cold-air drainage.

Soil varies widely. Some sites have shallow, rocky or rapidly draining soil; others have clay, compaction, alkalinity or salinity. None of those conditions should be assumed without inspection or testing. The regional pattern tells you to ask the questions—it does not supply the answers for every lot.

The Colorado Plateau and Southwestern highlands

Higher and northern portions of Arizona and New Mexico can align with Colorado Plateau, high-desert or Rocky Mountain conditions. Elevation can produce cold winters and a shorter season even where summer sun is intense. Monsoonal moisture influences some locations, but its timing and reliability vary, and bursts of rain can run off compacted or sloping soil.

High desert versus very hot low desert

High-desert gardening is not simply low-desert gardening at a higher address. Hard freezes, snow and a short or unpredictable frost-free period can be defining features. Warm-season plants may have limited time to perform, while some cool-season plants can use spring or fall windows.

Very hot Sonoran and low-Mojave gardens operate around different extremes. In those environments, intense low-desert heat and mild-winter timing often control the calendar. Phoenix- or Tucson-like conditions should not be generalized to the Colorado Plateau, Great Basin or a cold high-desert town.

How topography creates microclimates

Cold-air drainage

Cold air flows downslope and gathers in low places when conditions allow. Watch where frost appears first and snow lingers. Avoid placing marginally hardy plants in a recurring frost pocket simply because a regional map shows a suitable zone.

Slope and aspect

South-facing slopes tend to receive stronger winter sun and may warm earlier, but they can also expose plants to drying and temperature swings. North-facing slopes usually warm later. West-facing beds can accumulate fierce afternoon heat; east-facing beds may offer gentler morning sun.

Wind and shelter

Ridges, gaps and open plains increase exposure. Buildings, shrubs and permeable fences can create shelter, but solid barriers may generate turbulence. Observe snow drifting, bent growth and rapid surface drying to locate the windiest areas.

Urban heat

Concrete, asphalt and walls store heat. This may moderate a cold night or extend a shoulder season, but it also increases summer heat and moisture loss. A city garden should not borrow rural assumptions—and the reverse is equally true.

Why your USDA zone is only one layer

The USDA zone describes average annual extreme minimum winter temperature. It helps screen perennials for cold survival, but does not measure frost-free season, summer heat, wind, soil moisture or snow cover. The map itself cannot capture every wall, slope or frost pocket.

Use the zone, local freeze records and your own observations together. A perennial at the cold edge of its rating deserves extra scrutiny in an exposed bed. An annual needs enough suitable weather to flower, no matter how many zone numbers appear on its product page.

Your Interior West site-assessment checklist

  • Record elevation and landform without treating either as a precise planting rule.
  • Find the property's typical last damaging spring frost and first damaging fall frost, then note unusual years.
  • Identify winter minimums, freeze-thaw exposure and whether snow cover is dependable, intermittent or wind-scoured.
  • Separate warm summer days from warm nights; many interior gardens have large day-to-night swings.
  • Map full sun, reflected heat, afternoon shade and wind.
  • Dig several test holes to compare soil depth, texture, compaction and drainage.
  • Test soil before making pH, salinity or nutrient corrections.
  • Identify irrigation coverage and local water restrictions.
  • Mark frost pockets, roof runoff, warm walls and sheltered courtyards.

Turn the assessment into a plant shortlist
