Description
Orange, gold, and scarlet—sometimes all in the same flower cluster—make Streptosolen jamesonii look as if it has been dipped in a particularly vivid jar of marmalade. Buds open yellow, deepen through orange, and finish reddish orange, so the large rounded clusters carry several glowing shades at once. Against glossy green leaves, the effect is tropical, exuberant, and almost impossible to ignore.
Marmalade Bush is a branching evergreen shrub that commonly reaches about 4–6 feet tall and wide in the garden, though supported plants can climb higher in very mild climates. Use it against a warm wall, on a sheltered slope, beside garden stairs, or in a large container where the saturated color can be appreciated up close. It flowers heavily from spring into fall and may continue for much of the year where winters are gentle. Hummingbirds are frequent admirers.
Give it sun or bright part shade, regular water, and well-drained soil. Protection from hard frost is the large consideration: foliage can be damaged around freezing, so colder gardens should choose a sheltered microclimate or grow it in a container that can be protected. Light pruning after flowering keeps it branching and full. For more bold, architectural bloomers, visit our Shrubs & Trees collection.
