Description

Showy Milkweed lives up to its name with broad blue-green leaves and fragrant, four-inch clusters of rose-pink stars. This western native stands upright at about 40 inches, giving meadow plantings and naturalistic borders a clear, sculptural presence.

The flowers offer nectar and pollen to bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds, while the foliage is a host for monarch caterpillars. Once established, this durable perennial handles dry conditions and returns each year in Zones 3–9.

Sowing & Growing Instructions

Milkweed seed benefits from a cold, moist period. Sow outdoors in fall in a clean, prepared bed, or mix seed with lightly damp medium and refrigerate for about three weeks before spring sowing.

After stratification, sow about 1/4 inch deep and keep at 50–75°F in bright light with even moisture. Germination is typically 10–20 days under the source conditions. Transplant after frost or thin to 18–24 inches apart.

Grow in full sun for the sturdiest flowering, though some part shade is tolerated. Water during establishment, then allow this deep-rooted perennial to settle into a permanent, well-drained site; avoid disturbing mature roots.
