Description
The electric combination of rich purple flowers and vivid lime-green calyces makes Salvia mexicana ‘Limelight’ one of the most eye-catching sages we grow. Tall flower spikes seem almost illuminated from within, delivering a fresh, unexpected jolt of color just when the late-season garden is ready for something dramatic.
This is a big, handsome salvia, reaching roughly 6–8 feet tall and wide in favorable conditions. Give it room at the back of a border, beside a fence, or among large shrubs where its strong vertical stems can rise above grasses, dahlias, roses, and dark foliage. Hummingbirds, bees, and butterflies adore the nectar-rich flowers, and the chartreuse calyces extend the visual show.
Plant ‘Limelight’ in full sun to part shade with rich, well-drained soil and regular water for the most audacious bloom. In hot inland areas, afternoon shade helps keep the foliage lush. Cut it back after flowering or in late winter to renew the framework and control size; protect the crown from hard frost. The plant may take up space, but it pays rent in hummingbirds and impossible color. Give it room, then let it be fabulous. Explore more bold sages in our Salvia collection.
