Rumex sanguineus ssp. sanguineus
Red-veined Dock

“Wow, what is that?” is the usual response to Rumex sanguineus ssp. sanguineus, and for good reason. Also known as Red-veined Dock or bloody dock, this striking edible foliage plant produces bright green leaves dramatically traced with deep red veins, creating a bold, graphic look in garden beds, containers, and mixed plantings.

A superb alternative to ornamental grasses or ordinary filler plants, Red-veined Dock adds color, texture, and useful foliage to herb gardens, edible landscapes, cottage gardens, damp borders, and patio pots. Its upright clumps are especially handsome when paired with lettuces, parsley, violas, heucheras, ornamental kale, and other foliage-forward companions. Young leaves can be harvested in moderation for culinary use, adding tart flavor and vivid color.

Plant Rumex sanguineus ssp. sanguineus in sun to part shade with rich, moist, well-drained soil. Regular water keeps the foliage lush and beautiful. Trim flower stalks if you want to focus energy on leaves. Explore more beautiful and practical plants in our Edible & Useful collection.
