Description

Fernleaf lavender brings an airy, almost feathery look to the sunny garden. Its deeply divided silvery-green foliage has a distinctive aromatic character, while slender stems carry blue-violet, trident-shaped flowers through summer. The bushy plants add loose texture and fragrance to borders, beds, decorative containers, and fresh-cut arrangements.

This perennial lavender is especially attractive to butterflies. Starting the small seeds indoors is recommended so you can tend the seedlings carefully before moving them into a sunny, well-drained garden spot. Germination can be gradual and uneven, so keep the starting mix evenly moist but never soggy and provide a good light source as seedlings emerge.

  • Botanical name: Lavandula multifida
  • Life cycle: Perennial
  • Exposure: Full sun
  • Sowing: Start indoors and transplant
  • Seed-starting temperature: 60–70°F
  • Germination: 7–14 days under the source conditions
  • Bloom season: Summer
  • Approximate packet quantity: 45 seeds (30 mg)

When the seedlings have several sets of leaves, transplant them into deeper containers. Gradually acclimate young plants to outdoor conditions, then plant them out when they are about 2–3 inches tall. Plants may flower lightly in their first season and more fully in their second summer. After flowering, prune and shape the plants while removing spent flower stalks.

Find more individual varieties in our flower seed packets.

Sowing & Growing Instructions

Starting indoors is recommended. Sow according to the packet directions, then transplant established seedlings to a sunny site with fast-draining soil.

The source lists spring, fall, and winter sowing windows; choose the timing appropriate to your climate and protect young plants from unsuitable outdoor conditions.

Germination is typically 7–14 days under the source conditions. Avoid keeping established lavender in persistently wet soil.
