Phacelia viscida

At last, true-true royal blue for the garden. Phacelia viscida, or Sticky Phacelia, is a rare California native annual with saturated blue flowers that look almost too vivid to be real. Each bloom has a paler, mottled center and bright stamens, creating a tiny electric target that bees locate with impressive efficiency.

Branching plants commonly grow about 1–2 feet tall in cultivation, occasionally stretching taller in rich, sheltered conditions. Their airy form and astonishing color mingle beautifully with California poppies, clarkias, gilia, tidy tips, meadowfoam, and fine-textured grasses. Use it in native annual beds, pollinator plantings, meadow-style borders, or containers where the blue can be appreciated up close.

Give Sticky Phacelia sun to part shade and well-drained soil, with regular moisture during active growth. In warmer locations, light afternoon shade can help prolong the flower show. A light trim after the first flush, followed by water, may encourage another round. Allow a few stems to mature if you would like seedlings in open ground the following season.
