Description
Falling in love is rarely this colorful. Papaver rhoeas ‘Falling in Love’ is a Shirley poppy mix with semi-double, three-inch flowers in scarlet, rose, pink, peach, coral, soft orange, and picotee bicolors. No two plants seem quite alike, turning a small planting into a painterly collection of fluttering surprises.
The flowers bob on slender stems above loose foliage, creating the soft, old-fashioned movement that makes Shirley poppies so irresistible. Plants reach approximately 24–30 inches tall and are sublime with blue larkspur, delphiniums, bachelor buttons, grasses, white flowers, and other cool-season companions. The stems also bring that same airy movement to informal bouquets. Because the mixture varies from plant to plant, every new flower feels like opening a small surprise package.
This is a cool-season annual, best enjoyed when punishing heat or severe cold is not expected. Deadheading can extend the flower show, while allowing some seedpods to mature may produce another delightfully unpredictable round. The pods themselves add useful shape to dried arrangements after the petals have made their dramatic exit.
Romantic without being restrained, ‘Falling in Love’ is less a single color scheme than a joyful garden plot twist. Explore more poppies.
