A statuesque and rather glamorous Love-in-a-Mist, Nigella ‘Alabaster’ bears silky white, star-shaped flowers with striking dark purple to nearly black centers. The contrast is marvelous: luminous petals, inky hearts, and a soft green cloud of finely cut foliage that makes every flower appear to float.

Growing about 18–24 inches tall, ‘Alabaster’ brings lightness to borders and cutting gardens without disappearing into the planting. Its white-and-black coloring is easy to combine with nearly anything, from pale romantic flowers to deep burgundy foliage and hot jewel tones. The delicate appearance also provides a useful counterpoint to broad leaves and heavier flower forms.

After bloom, the show changes rather than ends. Inflated seedpods follow the flowers like curious little green balloons, adding structure to the garden and excellent material for fresh or dried arrangements. Even after drying, the pods retain a delicate, architectural silhouette that looks handsome in winter arrangements. This cool-season annual may also reseed when allowed to mature, creating a possible encore without turning the garden into a formal production.
