We were never exactly swooning over hebes—until Hebe speciosa arrived carrying flower clusters big enough to fill your palm. Chubby magenta-violet spikes, often 3–4 inches long, appear through summer and into fall above glossy, rounded green leaves. The color is thrillingly bold, nectar-rich, and sufficiently showy to make the common name feel almost restrained.

This evergreen New Zealand shrub develops a rounded, spreading form, typically about 3–5 feet tall and around 4 feet wide in garden conditions. Its handsome foliage supplies year-round structure without the clipped, boxy look of many small shrubs. Use it in mixed borders, coastal gardens, pollinator plantings, informal hedges, or a substantial container where both flowers and foliage can earn their keep.

Plant Showy Hebe in full sun to part shade with compost-enriched, well-drained soil and regular water. Good drainage matters particularly during cold, wet weather, and a little protection from hard freezes is welcome. Light pruning after the main flower flush keeps the shrub dense, but avoid cutting far into old bare wood.
