Lady Marmalade

‘Lady Marmalade’ is a deliciously glowing California Poppy in sunset shades of apricot, amber, peach, and gold. The silky flowers seem to hold the light long after the sun has moved on, hovering above finely cut blue-green foliage in a soft, shimmering mound. Every bloom varies slightly, giving a planting the warm, painterly look of a California evening sky.

Growing about 12–18 inches tall and wide, this selection is substantial enough to make a colorful drift but relaxed enough to weave among grasses, blue wildflowers, lavender, cream, burgundy foliage, and other warm-toned annuals. It is especially lovely along paths and at the front of a border, where the shifting colors can be admired up close.

Like its wild California relatives, ‘Lady Marmalade’ prefers sun, drainage, and a reasonably light touch from the gardener. It performs in poor to average soil, becomes low-water once established, and may self-sow if it approves of the spot. The flowers draw pollinators, while deer generally find something else to nibble.
