Seaside Buckwheat

One could sell tickets to the summer pollination show staged by Eriogonum latifolium. Bees, butterflies, and other beneficial insects mob the flower clusters, while the plant also supports the caterpillars of several native butterflies, including blues and hairstreaks. Happily, this habitat value arrives in a very handsome package.

Seaside Buckwheat forms a compact mound about 12–18 inches tall and roughly 2 feet wide, clothed in softly felted blue-gray, spoon-shaped leaves. Rounded clusters of delicate pink and white flowers age to rusty rose and remain attractive as they dry into fall. The shifting colors look marvelous beside native grasses, coastal sages, California fuchsias, and silver foliage.

Give this California coastal native full sun and excellent drainage. Once established, it tolerates drought, salt spray, wind, and deer browsing remarkably well. In hot inland gardens, occasional summer water can keep it looking fuller; near the coast it generally wants much less. Use it along edges, on slopes, in habitat gardens, or in a broad container where the flowers can be watched at insect level.
