Description
Warm, textural, and made for the golden end of summer, Amaranthus cruentus ‘Autumn Touch’ carries upright plumes that shade from fresh pistachio and cream into copper, bronze, and rosy brown. The colors evolve as the flowers mature, giving the plant the look of an entire autumn arrangement growing on one sturdy stem. Deep green foliage provides a lush backdrop without stealing the show.
Strong branching plants reach about 3½–4 feet tall and bring generous height to sunny borders and cutting gardens. The substantial plumes are superb in fresh bouquets and dry beautifully for wreaths and everlasting arrangements. Pair them with orange dahlias, burgundy celosia, lime zinnias, ornamental grasses, or anything smoky and plum-colored for an extravagantly seasonal display.
Give ‘Autumn Touch’ full sun, well-drained soil, and regular water while it establishes. Pinch young plants around 12 inches tall if you want more branching and a larger harvest of moderately sized stems; leave them unpinched for fewer, heavier plumes. Heat helps it race into growth, and established plants are remarkably easygoing. Harvest before the seed becomes heavy for the cleanest cut material, or leave a few heads for seed-eating birds.
