Texas is not one gardening climate. Humid East Texas, the Gulf Coast, the Panhandle, Hill Country and the Trans-Pecos can differ dramatically in rainfall, humidity, winter cold and soil. USDA hardiness zones help screen winter survival but do not show summer heat or humidity. In Texas, a plant can be cold-hardy yet fail during sustained heat, or heat-tolerant yet be lost in an unusually hard freeze. Hot nights can limit recovery, especially where humidity remains elevated.
Check local winter extremes, number and duration of hot periods, nighttime conditions and site exposure. Protecting a plant with a south wall may help in winter while creating excessive summer heat. Keep tender foliage away from the harshest west-facing surfaces unless the plant has proven performance in comparable exposure.
Hardscape can also change winter conditions. A wall may radiate warmth after sunset, yet an enclosed low spot can collect cold air. Map these patterns through summer and winter. Use the protected pockets for plants that benefit from moderation, and keep the most resilient palette for exposed edges.
