Description
A silver carpet with a fiery finish! Zauschneria californica var. latifolium 'Everett's Choice' pairs soft gray-green foliage with a generous display of tubular orange-red flowers from summer into fall. This low-growing California Fuchsia brings bright color to sunny gardens just when many spring bloomers are taking a rest. You may also know the same plant as Epilobium canum var. latifolium 'Everett's Choice'.
Growing about 6 to 12 inches tall and spreading roughly 3 to 4 feet wide, this perennial subshrub makes a lovely groundcover for open slopes, the front of a native border, or a rock garden. Let its stems spill over a low retaining wall, or give it room to weave between boulders. Hummingbirds visit the nectar-rich flowers, and the softly textured foliage provides a cool contrast to those hot-colored blooms. It can spread by underground rhizomes, so allow space for the patch to expand.
Plant in full sun with well-drained soil; a little afternoon shade can help in very hot inland gardens. Water regularly while establishing, then reduce irrigation. Coastal plants often need little to no summer water, while an occasional deep soaking can keep inland plants looking fresh. Hardy in USDA zones 7–10, it may become semi-evergreen or die back seasonally depending on climate. Cut back established plants after flowering in mild climates to encourage fresh growth. Plant Care & Arrival Guide

The photos are wrong because the foliage is blue-gray, not green. (Not sure how this amazing nursery screwed this up.) This plant has amazing silvery mounds of foliage until July, when it explodes into blooms that hummingbirds fight over. I love it as a seasonal groundcover.
It grows magnificently in clay that floods in the winter (!!!) and dries out in the summer in coastal Santa Barbara County (zone 10).
