Sowing & Growing Instructions

After all danger of frost, direct sow in full sun when temperatures stay above 50°F day and night. Plant seeds 1 inch deep and 4 inches apart in fertile, well-worked soil, then keep evenly moist as seedlings emerge.

Germination is typically 8–10 days under the source conditions. Thin plants to 12–18 inches apart, leaving about 3 feet between rows. To start early, sow in individual pots and transplant carefully with as little root disturbance as possible.

When the outer petals shrivel and the center florets have dried, cover ripening heads with paper bags if birds are taking the immature seed. Cut mature heads, dry thoroughly, and rub out the plump kernels for roasting or storage.
