Description

With pinecone-shaped flower heads topped by bright purple “ribbons,” Purple Ribbons Spanish lavender is a little garden firecracker. Aromatic silvery-green foliage adds texture even when the plant is not in bloom, while the distinctive flowers bring bold color and fragrance to sunny borders, raised beds, and containers.

This heat-tolerant, tender perennial is at home in full sun and fast-draining soil. Bees and butterflies visit the flowers, and cut stems can be gathered for dried arrangements, sachets, and other fragrant crafts. Start the seed indoors for close attention during germination, or sow directly into a finely prepared garden bed once the weather is warm and settled.

  • Botanical name: Lavandula stoechas
  • Also known as: Rabbit Ear Lavender
  • Life cycle: Tender perennial
  • Exposure: Full sun
  • Sowing: Direct sow or start indoors and transplant
  • Seed-starting temperature: 60–70°F
  • Planting depth: Press lightly onto the soil surface
  • Germination: 14–25 days under the source conditions
  • Mature height: 18–24 in.

Keep the seedbed or starting mix evenly moist but not soggy while seedlings emerge. Gradually acclimate indoor-started plants before moving them outside. Plants may flower lightly during their first season and more fully by their second summer. Prune lightly after flowering to shape the plant and remove spent flower stalks.

Find more individual varieties in our flower seed packets.

Sowing & Growing Instructions

Direct sow or start indoors and transplant in spring or winter, choosing the timing appropriate to your climate.

Press the seed lightly onto the soil surface. Germination is typically 14–25 days under the source conditions.

Move established plants to full sun and fast-draining soil. Once established, avoid persistently wet conditions.
