Papaver commutatum
Ladybird

Our most popular poppy for good reason, Papaver commutatum ‘Ladybird’ puts the pop in the spring garden with brilliant true-red blooms, each petal marked with bold black spots. When planted in groups, the effect is dazzling — a cheerful little field of ladybird poppies glowing above tidy, finely textured foliage.

This easy annual poppy is wonderfully well-behaved, bringing bright seasonal color to cottage gardens, wildflower plantings, cutting gardens, pollinator borders, and sunny dry beds. The vivid red flowers pair beautifully with bachelor buttons, larkspur, corn cockle, white cosmos, grasses, and silver foliage. Bees and beneficial insects appreciate the open blooms, while gardeners adore the instant color and old-fashioned charm.

Plant Papaver commutatum ‘Ladybird’ in full sun with well-drained soil. It is easy to grow from seed or starts, and may self-sow where happy if some seed heads are allowed to mature. For best effect, plant in drifts and let the scarlet show begin. Explore more classic beauties in our Papaver - Poppies collection.
