Bouncy, merry, and completely charming, Nemophila maculata—Baby Five Spot—is a California native annual with masses of white, bowl-shaped flowers, each marked by one iridescent purple spot at every petal tip. The effect is playful, graphic, and somehow still perfectly at home beneath oaks and among spring wildflowers.

This low, softly sprawling plant is generally about 6–12 inches tall, with scalloped spring-green foliage that may be solid or sweetly speckled. Let it bubble through neighboring plants, soften the edge of a bed, trail from a large pot, or mingle with California poppies, Baby Blue Eyes, Chinese Houses, meadowfoam, and tidy tips. The flowers also press beautifully for small botanical projects.

Give Baby Five Spot full sun near the coast or part shade in warmer gardens, along with well-drained soil and moderate moisture during its cool growing season. It completes its display before serious summer heat and may self-sow where open soil remains. Once established from fall or winter rain, volunteer plants often need very little help.
