Collection: Dry Shade

Dry shade is one of the garden’s trickiest combinations: limited light above, limited moisture below, and often a crowd of established roots competing for both. The right plants can bring foliage, texture, and seasonal flowers to spaces beneath open-canopy trees, along sheltered walls, under large shrubs, and beside structures protected from rainfall.

Not all shade or dryness is equal. Bright filtered light differs from deep shade, and soil beneath a tree may dry much faster than soil beside a building. Observe the site through the seasons, then compare each plant’s light, drainage, mature size, cold tolerance, and water needs. Even drought-tolerant dry-shade plants need regular water while establishing.

Start with smaller plants where digging around tree roots is difficult, and avoid severing large roots. A modest layer of mulch can help conserve moisture, but keep it away from trunks and crowns. Combine spreading groundcovers, foliage plants, and upright flowering selections to create depth without demanding a blazing patch of sun.
