Description
Salvia guaranitica ‘Black & Bloom’ creates a spectacular contrast with large, deep violet-blue flowers held in nearly black calyces on dark stems. Its richly colored blooms rise above handsome dark green foliage from late spring through fall, bringing months of bold color and movement to the garden.
This vigorous, upright sage grows approximately 3–4 feet tall and wide. Plant it in full sun to partial shade and fertile, well-drained soil. Provide regular water while it becomes established; mature plants tolerate heat, humidity, and periods of drought. ‘Black & Bloom’ is generally perennial in USDA zones 8–10 and can be enjoyed as a fast-growing annual in colder climates.
The nectar-rich tubular flowers are especially attractive to hummingbirds and also draw butterflies and other pollinators. Use this dramatic Salvia near patios, at the back of a sunny border, in wildlife gardens, or as the centerpiece of a large container. Pair it with gold, orange, white, or chartreuse flowers and foliage to emphasize its unusually dark stems and luminous blue blooms.
