Description

The Birds & Bees Sunflowers earn their name twice over. Golden-yellow petals surround rich chocolate discs that offer pollen and nectar to bees in bloom, then ripen into oil-rich black seeds with softer shells for songbirds.

Sowing & Growing Instructions

Direct sow in full sun after frost, once day and night temperatures are at least 50°F. Plant seeds 1 inch deep and about 6 inches apart in well-worked garden soil, firm gently, and keep moist until emergence.

Germination is typically 8–10 days under the source conditions. Thin seedlings to 12–15 inches apart; for an early start, sow in individual pots several weeks before frost ends and transplant with minimal root disturbance once nights are warm.

Protect young seedlings from birds until established. For a long flowering season, make additional sowings several weeks apart. Leave mature, dry heads in place for birds or cut and finish drying them for later feeding.
