Description
Fiery, fearless, and quintessentially Californian, Epilobium canum is the classic California fuchsia gardeners have loved for generations. From late summer into fall, this scrappy native erupts with clusters of slender, tubular flowers in vivid orange-red—the color and shape hummingbirds readily investigate. Narrow gray-green foliage on upright to gently arching stems forms a 12- to 24-inch mound that can become nearly covered with flowers at peak bloom.
This drought-tolerant California native perennial is generally hardy in zones 7–10 and performs best in full sun with lean, well-drained soil. Provide regular water while roots establish; afterward, follow local conditions and the plant’s response when reducing summer irrigation. Aromatic or textured growth may make it less appealing to browsing deer, although no plant is deer-proof. The late-season flowers provide nectar for hummingbirds, bees, and butterflies when many spring bloomers have finished.
Plant California fuchsia on dry slopes, in sun-baked borders, or with other California natives such as buckwheat, manzanita, and sage. For more colors and growth habits, explore our Epilobium canum collection.
