Description
Fast, lush, and delightfully extravagant, Cobaea scandens ‘Violet’ is the kind of climber that makes a garden feel instantly more enchanted. This vigorous cup and saucer vine sends up handsome twining stems dressed in fresh green foliage, then unfurls its extraordinary bell-shaped blooms like dangling little chalices. The flowers begin with a curious greenish glow before deepening into rich violet-purple, creating a moody, luxurious display that feels both tropical and old-fashioned all at once.
Also known as cup and saucer vine, this theatrical annual climber is listed at about 3 to 4 feet tall, but don’t be fooled by that modest number. Once it gets moving, its twining stems can climb, ramble, or trail much farther with support, often reaching 10 to 20 feet in a single season. Give it a trellis, arbor, fence, pergola, obelisk, or roomy container, and it will eagerly scramble upward, softening hard edges and turning plain structures into a lush wall of foliage and flowers. It is especially fabulous where you want a little garden drama: framing an entry, cloaking a sunny fence, adding privacy, or creating a velvety summer backdrop for cottage gardens, patio plantings, and pollinator-friendly borders.
Plant Cobaea scandens ‘Violet’ in sun to part sun with regular water and sturdy support. Give it room to stretch, climb, and show off, then enjoy the wonderfully romantic display as those mysterious violet bells begin to appear. Explore more beautiful climbers in our Vines collection.
