Description
Moody, velvety, and gloriously theatrical, Ipomoea purpurea ‘Star of Yelta’ is the morning glory for gardeners who think pale blue is simply too polite. Its generous trumpets open in saturated purple-violet, each one lit from within by a white throat and a wine-red starburst. The flowers are at their luminous best in morning light, when an established vine can look as though someone has pinned dozens of jewel-toned gramophones to the fence.
This is a fast annual climber, capable of reaching about 8–12 feet in a season when given warmth and something to grab. Send it up a trellis, arbor, obelisk, porch rail, or an unlovely fence that needs an immediate personality transplant. Heart-shaped green leaves make a dense backdrop for the blooms, and the flowers continue from summer toward frost in favorable conditions.
Full sun produces the strongest flowering, though afternoon protection can be welcome in very hot inland gardens. Give it regular water while it is growing and reasonably well-drained soil; overly rich feeding can encourage a magnificent wall of leaves at the expense of flowers. Morning glories may reseed where happy, so remove pods if you prefer fewer volunteers. See more plants prepared to climb, ramble, and generally misbehave upward in our Vines collection.
