Purple Gleam

Oh, what a charmer this one is! ‘Purple Gleam’ takes the easygoing spirit of our beloved California Poppy and dresses it in a dreamy wash of lavender-rose, as though each silky petal had been touched with a watercolor brush. The color shifts with the light, moving from dusty mauve and soft pink to a cooler purple glow.

The single flowers float above fine blue-green foliage on plants roughly 12–18 inches tall. Their painterly coloring plays beautifully with lavender, cream, primrose yellow, silver foliage, and deeper wine tones, making ‘Purple Gleam’ a natural for cottage gardens, romantic native-style plantings, containers, and loose wildflower drifts. The fine foliage keeps the plant looking light even when several are grouped together.

Just like the species, it is wonderfully unfussy: sun, decent drainage, and restraint with water are more valuable than pampering. Deadhead to extend the display, or allow some flowers to form seed if you would enjoy a possible return engagement. Deer tend to pass it by, and established plants are well suited to summer-dry garden styles.
