Description
Deep blue, fragrant, and absolutely smothered in bloom, Ceanothus ‘Dark Star’ is one of the most striking California native evergreen shrubs. From late winter into early spring, royal blue flower clusters cover the plant, creating a dazzling display for gardeners and a feast for butterflies, hummingbirds, bees, and beneficial insects.
Also known as California lilac, ‘Dark Star’ grows up to 8' tall and 6' wide, with tiny glossy dark green leaves and a structure that can become tree-like with age. It looks especially dramatic planted near gray foliage, white flowers, grasses, sages, manzanitas, and other water-wise native plants. Best suited to coastal gardens and mild climates, it brings bold color, habitat value, and year-round structure to dry borders and native landscapes.
Plant Ceanothus ‘Dark Star’ in full sun with excellent drainage. Once established, it prefers little to no summer water and resents soggy conditions. Prune lightly after bloom if needed. Explore more spectacular native shrubs in our Ceanothus - California Lilac collection.
