Description
Fiery, fearless, and quintessentially Californian, Epilobium canum is the classic California Fuchsia gardeners have loved for generations. From late summer into fall, this scrappy native erupts with cascading clusters of slender, tubular flowers in vivid orange-red — exactly the color and shape that drives hummingbirds wild. Narrow gray-green foliage on upright to gently arching stems forms a 12- to 24-inch mound that practically vanishes beneath the bloom show at peak season.
A tough, drought-tolerant native perennial hardy in zones 7-10, California Fuchsia thrives in full sun on lean, well-drained soil and asks for almost no summer water once established. It's deer-resistant and one of the most important late-season nectar plants for hummingbirds preparing for migration. Bees and butterflies visit, too.
Plant it on dry slopes, in sun-baked borders, or alongside other California natives like buckwheat, manzanita, and sage for a vibrant, water-wise garden that explodes with color just as summer is winding down. A true Western classic that deserves a spot in every dry garden. To see more California Fuschia plants, please enjoy our Epilobium canum collection.
