Description
A beautiful selection of California native Beach Strawberry, Fragaria chiloensis ‘Carole Ann’ combines glossy evergreen foliage, oversized white flowers, and vigorous groundcover performance. Discovered in the dunes at Bodega Bay and introduced through Tilden Botanic Garden, it feels distinctly ornamental while remaining wonderfully useful.
Plants stay only about 4–8 inches tall, spreading by runners to weave between rocks, edge beds, stabilize slopes, soften walls, and spill from containers or hanging baskets. The shiny leaves may blush red in winter, adding seasonal color even before the generous 2-inch spring flowers appear. Those blooms can be followed by curious white berries dotted with red seeds—more charming than crop-sized.
Give ‘Carole Ann’ sun to part shade and well-drained soil. Regular water helps new plants knit together quickly; established mats are quite drought tolerant, particularly in coastal conditions. Allow room for runners, or clip wandering ones where a precise edge matters. Its tolerance of wind and coastal exposure makes it especially useful near the ocean, but inland gardeners can enjoy it with some afternoon protection. Glossy, low, and far more interesting than ordinary groundcover, it earns close placement. Explore more runners in our Fragaria collection.
