Eriogonum grande rubescens

Here is a California native that manages to be both perfectly civilized and a little bit wild. Eriogonum grande var. rubescens, or red-flowered buckwheat, makes a low cushion of softly textured gray-green leaves, then sends up a flotilla of rosy pink to deep red flower clusters. The rounded blooms age handsomely rather than collapsing overnight, so the plant keeps its good looks well beyond the first flush.

Native to California’s Channel Islands, this compact perennial is especially useful near the front of a sunny border, along a path, in a rock garden, or spilling over the edge of a dry garden bed. It generally stays about 10–18 inches tall but can widen to roughly 3 feet, creating a substantial patch without towering over its neighbors. Pair it with silvery sages, small grasses, dudleyas, or blue-flowered natives for a combination that looks unmistakably Californian.

The flowers are busy little gathering places for bees, butterflies, and other beneficial insects. Give it full sun, sharp drainage, and modest water while it settles in; established plants prefer a leaner, drier summer routine. In heavy soil, a mound or raised position is worth the trouble.
