    Description

Here is a California native that manages to be both perfectly civilized and a little bit wild. Eriogonum grande var. rubescens, or red-flowered buckwheat, makes a low cushion of softly textured gray-green leaves, then sends up a flotilla of rosy pink to deep red flower clusters. The rounded blooms age handsomely rather than collapsing overnight, so the plant keeps its good looks well beyond the first flush.

Native to California’s Channel Islands, this compact perennial is especially useful near the front of a sunny border, along a path, in a rock garden, or spilling over the edge of a dry garden bed. It generally stays about 10–18 inches tall but can widen to roughly 3 feet, creating a substantial patch without towering over its neighbors. Pair it with silvery sages, small grasses, dudleyas, or blue-flowered natives for a combination that looks unmistakably Californian.

The flowers are busy little gathering places for bees, butterflies, and other beneficial insects. Give it full sun, sharp drainage, and modest water while it settles in; established plants prefer a leaner, drier summer routine. In heavy soil, a mound or raised position is worth the trouble. Explore more locally adapted beauties in our California Native Perennials collection.

What a little charmer! While the leaves are a soft grey/green the I find a little uninteresting, the flowerheads that shoot up in a playful display are wonderful! Love to see them dancing in a summer breeze! I’m in Orange County, about 6 miles in from the ocean, and these have been a lovely little addition that require pretty much no work.

    Charming plant

This has turned into a lovely small mound, which is currently blooming with a delightful mass of light red blooms.

    Slow Growing?

Planted two a year ago and they haven't grown much beyond their original size. Getting too much sun? Not enough water? Don't like our decomposed sandstone soil? Slow grower?

    Attractive and Hearty!

My one buckwheat has grown into a 2.5 ft diameter mound. The leaves are attractive and it is covered in the beginnings of a show-stopping bloom. It's thriving with low water in zone 10b.

Zone 8b and doing well so far!

Love this plant so far. Already have some stalks w/ blooms forming in mid-June. Love color. Soil is mostly rocky and clay. Hopefully it will survive winters here. Crossing fingers!
