Description
Big, fragrant, and joyfully coastal, Lupinus arboreus is a California native shrub lupine with loads of deliciously scented yellow flower spikes from spring into mid-summer. Also known as yellow coastal bush lupine or tree lupine, it quickly grows into a substantial, multi-branching shrub about 4' tall and 4' wide, often developing a stout, tree-like base.
This showy perennial lupine is a fabulous choice for dry gardens, coastal plantings, hillsides, parking strips, native plant borders, and pollinator-friendly landscapes. The 6–8" bloom spikes attract butterflies, bumblebees, and other beneficial insects, while the bold form adds structure and sunny color to low-water gardens.
Plant Lupinus arboreus in full sun with excellent drainage. It is deer resistant, drought tolerant, and tolerant of neglect once established, but dislikes overly wet soil. In irrigated gardens, add extra drainage such as lava rock at planting. Cut back in fall or winter to maintain a bushy shape.
