Description
A little patch of mountain sunshine! Arnica chamissonis, commonly called Meadow Arnica or Chamisso Arnica, lifts cheerful golden-yellow daisies above fresh green foliage in early to midsummer. Native to moist meadows and open conifer forests across western North America—including California’s Sierra Nevada—this cold-hardy wildflower brings the relaxed beauty of a high-country meadow right into the garden. Bees, bumblebees, and butterflies are just as delighted by those sunny blooms as we are!
This winter-deciduous perennial generally grows 1–2' tall and gradually spreads 1–3' wide through underground rhizomes, forming a handsome colony when happy. Plant it in full sun along the coast or at higher elevations, or provide light afternoon shade in warmer inland gardens. Meadow Arnica prefers fertile, well-drained soil with regular moisture and should not be allowed to become severely dry during active growth. Hardy in USDA zones 4–9, it is especially well suited to mountain gardens, moist meadow plantings, pollinator beds and the edges of regularly watered cottage borders.
Plant Meadow Arnica in small groups where its golden flowers can mingle naturally with native Irises, Columbines, Sedges, Yarrow and other moisture-loving meadow companions. It is traditionally associated with herbal preparations for external use, but Arnica should not be eaten or used internally. Allow the rhizomes room to wander, divide established colonies when needed, and remove spent stems after flowering for a tidier appearance—or leave a few seedheads standing for a touch of wild meadow character.
